adidas Consortium x The Next Door
24 . 08 . 19

The Next Door brings a distinctive vibe of their French hometown to two court-ready styles from the adidas sneaker stable: the classic SC Premiere and the future-classic A.R. Trainer. The Next Door began life literally next door to its forebearer in Avignon, south-eastern France. Founder Nicolas Ivars had opened Circle, a hole-in-the-wall-Esque passion project that specialised in skatewear, in 1999, before taking on the larger space vacated by his neighbours in 2006. “We thought there was something about the place, a real soul, and we wanted to bring its cosy side into what we were doing,” says Nicolas in the SHPTLKS interview that accompanies the release, before elaborating: “old wood coupled with the modernity of the clothing.” It quickly became a go-to destination for French aficionados of skate, street and premium fashion eager to find something special outside the Paris bubble. Four years after that, Nicolas seized the opportunity to convert the oldest theatre in Avignon into Crillon, a contemporary concept store that pushes the boundaries and blurs the lines between luxury and street culture.

It is from this eye-catching location in The Next Door’s universe that this collaboration takes its initial inspiration. As Nicolas explains in his SHPTLKS interview when he approached adidas Consortium about the possibility of collaborating, they simply told him to “tell them a good story and we’ll take it from there”. He immediately landed on the rich theatrical history of Avignon, a place that aficionados flock to every year for its world-famous theatre festival. In Crillon, Nicolas and The Next Door had their own personal link to that world.

The two shoes pay homage to festival d’Avignon by drawing on the age-old theatrical archetypes of Comedie et Tragedie, two forms that at first thought seem oppositional but actually share an underlying harmony – much like the two shoes that make up the pack.

The A.R. Trainer celebrates Comedie, taking inspiration from classic harlequin costumes seen throughout history on the stage of the Comedia De L’Arte theatre. It features subtle nods to the colours of those costumes with shades of peachy-pink across the three stripes and a soft mint-green sole on the underside.

The SC Premiere takes inspiration from ‘Tragedie’, utilizing a minimalist white palette punctuated by sections of stark, cardinal red – “the colour of drapes on a stage, the final curtain…” as Nicolas explains. Its understated appearance belies a host of premium fabrications, including full-grain leather uppers and nubuck eyestays.

Both shoes feature The Next Door branding, as well as the iconic laughing/crying masks on each respective Comedie/Tragedie pair. Together, they form a celebratory homage to both the fashion-forward and the theatrical: two key characteristics of The Next Door’s Avignon home.

adidas Consortium Torsion TRDC
23 . 08 . 19

This year, adidas Consortium has flipped the script somewhat, with partnership releases joined by an equally strong in-house showing. The focus of these is largely on the Torsion System technology, which first debuted exactly thirty years ago in the iconic ZX running range. It has since become an enduring, revered part of the adidas mythos, bringing high degrees of stability to countless footwear styles over the years. By using a TPU arch to bridge the heel and forefoot, Torsion allows the front and rear of the foot to operate and adapt to surfaces independently.

One of the lesser-known adidas shoes to utilize the Torsion System was the Torsion TRDC. Appearing towards the turn of the millennium, the rugged runner was tooled up to offer optimum performance for the trail. The Torsion System was accompanied by a host of other functional design and fabrication qualities including an aggressive outsole pattern provided superior tread, while the mixed-material uppers ensured comfort and stability.  All this was wrapped up in distinctive, of-its-era use of bright colours.

In keeping with the current reverence for that very aesthetic, the new Torsion TRDC is a painstakingly faithful update of the silhouette, materials and technologies that makes the original such a lost gem of the adidas back catalogue. The EVA midsole features an ADIPRENE heel component rendered in a burst of lime green – a styling replicated on the Torsion System beneath. An electric blue gradient runs around much of the remaining midsole, as well as across the blend of mesh and synthetic materials that comprise the uppers. The overall result feels firmly rooted in the turn of the millennium, while also defiantly on trend for 2019 – a testament to the long-lasting appeal of the functionality and craftsmanship at the heart of adidas’ running shoe stable.

The adidas Consortium Torsion TRDC launches at limitEDitions Barcelona on the 23rd of August.

adidas OG ZX Series ’30 Years of Torsion’
 10 . 08 . 19

For SS19, adidas has made the iconic ZX running shoe series a focal point of its offering, with numerous iterations and updates created both inhouse and with Consortium partners around the world. These releases also offer up the chance to celebrate the equally enduring adidas Torsion System technology, which first debuted in the ZX range exactly thirty years ago. It is a technology that has continued to play a part in numerous adidas models over the subsequent three decades, appearing across all four models in this release. By using a TPU arch to bridge the heel and forefoot, Torsion allows the front and rear of the foot to operate and adapt to surfaces independently, offering high degrees of support and stability.

The latest models in this celebratory line of releases hark back to four of the original shoes that first made the ZX series so sought after: the ZX 5000, ZX 6000, ZX 7000 and ZX 9000. Each of the original versions was designed to suit slightly different running requirements, catering to all types of runners and ensuring the highest levels of performance no matter what shape the wearer’s run took. Each new iteration stays true to these characteristics, while also utilizing the OG materials and colourways that captured the attention of serious runners and sneakerheads alike. The instantly-recognizable silhouettes and underlying technologies combined with eye-catching palettes that partly signify different elements of the shoe’s performance capabilities: blue for cushioning; green for guidance; yellow for support. The key, contemporary updates come in the form of a new lace jewel and insole, both of which feature special ’30 years of Torsion’ branding.

The adidas Consortium OG ZX Series '30 Years of Torsion' series launching at limitEDitions Barcelona starting with the ZX 5000 on the 10th of August.

The accompanying imagery for the release draws on the aesthetics and ideals of one of adidas’ most memorable campaigns of the 1980s: ‘I want, I can’. The punchy message captured the two components at the heart of high-level athletic performance: drive and desire, coupled with the very best functionality and craftsmanship. The simplicity of the slogan is matched by the bright, colour-block graphic approach, mirroring the way similar colours were used to such a powerful effect on the original ZX models – and continue to be in these latest reissues.
